Description

A view of the painting whose subject is Embarkation of the Pilgrims from Delft Haven, painted by Edgar Parker after Robert Weir. On the back of the view is printed: “A. S. Burbank, Bookseller and Stationer, Odd Fellows’ Block, No. 6 Main Street, Plymouth, Mass., Catalogue of Views mailed free on application.” The painting is in the collection of Pilgrim Hall Museum in Plymouth, Massachusetts. It shows the minister, John Robinson, surrounded by the Pilgrim families for a farewell service on the deck of the Speedwell before its departure from Holland.
The original painting was done by Robert W. Weir on commission by the U. S. government to be placed in a panel in the rotunda of the Capital in Washington, D.C. The Pilgrim Society commissioned Massachusetts artist Edgar Parker to recreate Weir’s painting for the museum in 1875.
The yellow mount measures 7 inches by 4 1/4 inches. There is an old collection number penciled on the back. This large size mount was used by photographers from 1874 to 1884.
The view has a bit of light soiling on the mount. Otherwise it is in excellent condition.
