Description
1962 Gibson EB3 bass. comes with the original "chipboard" gibson case. the case is in fair condition and will need some repair, but at least it is original to the guitar. this was a one owner guitar since new. i traded an instrument for it from the original owner. as is the case with many of the SG style gibson instruments, the headstock had been broken and i took the job on in order to restore the old bass to playing condition the way it should be done. i have repaired guitars now for almost 40 years and the repair i did to this headstock is the most extensive and thorough i have ever done. an instrument like this deserves to be repaired as best as possible. i used only wood splices to repair the headstock. there are 14 wood splices making up the repair so that NO wood putty filler was used and it would be stronger than when new. i used maple splints mixed in with the mahogany splices and also maple veneer on the face and then black lacquer for the cosmetics. the splices/veneers are from right above the E and G machine head and extend down around frets 2/3. the headstock area above those machine heads was not touched. you can still see the original gibson serial number inked on the upper part of the back. there are lacquer checks on the face of the headstock in the upper half. the final strength that most luthiers do not use but would benefit from enormously is 4 layers of fiberglass cloth and resin on the back of the head/neck. this is as strong a repair as i can do. the finish on the bass is original, but it looks in some areas that some overspray was done on it. if the buyer wants, a good naptha wet sanding with 600/1200 grit paper and then polishing with buffing compounds and then wax/polish would really make it look good, but....i chose to leave the original finish alone as it looks pretty good like it is, and the new owner can chose what he wants to do. there are some repaired cracks on the side of the guitar around the electronic cavity. there are also repaired cracks around the output jack. many SG guitars have the output jack cracks as this is a very thin area. never use a straight jack plug on these SG instruments as the stress of the cord pulling the jack will do this. use a 90degree plug. the pickups are original. the bridge pickup has a "patent applied for" sticker on the back. looking at the pic of the electronics in the control cavity, this all looks like original gibson 1962 wiring. i sprayed the pots with contact cleaner. the frets look great. no need for replacement or leveling. the nut is original and the machine heads are original and work fine. the mute assembly is still on the bass, but the mute material has broken down and is not in the slot. easy to replace with hard felt or rubber. the headstock was previously repaired and the work was not as good as it should have been. the vertical alignment of the headstock is fine and the relationship of the plane of the fretboard and the headstock is slightly tilted to the bass side only noticeable if you look at the very end of the head sighting down the fret board. this has no bearing on how the instrument plays, only cosmetic. most would not even notice, but as a luthier/repair person, i always point out EVERYTHING i know about an instrument so the potential new owner will be fully informed. i have other pictures of the headstock repair and will send them to anyone wanting to see them. also, any questions you might have about the instrument, i will be glad to answer them. the strings that are on it are just OK. whoever buys this bass, if you will send me a set of strings of your choice, i will install them and cut the nut slots to fit and adjust to action to your specs. the truss rod works fine. the truss rod cover is original as are the knobs. as i said, this was a one owner bass played in all sorts of bands in the 60s and up. the electronics seem to be fine. the 4 way switch is original. two of the positions turn on the neck and bridge pickups by themselves and the other two positions seem to be some combination of the two. the controls are two volumes and two tone controls. i hope i have covered everything a potential buyer needs to know. please...again ask me any questions you like. i have repaired instruments for decades and there is just about nothing you can desire to know about this vintage bass that i cannot help you with. buyer pays shipping. i will not charge for packing...and it will be pack VERY well for shipping via FEDEX and insured. that will all be included in the shipping price. i have shipped many instruments and have never had an issue. instrument is vintage and sold as is and everything i know about it is fully divulged. many thanks!
