Beautiful Antique Paris France 18” Mon Cheri Louis Leon Prieur Bisque Doll uniquely strung
This gorgeous French doll was in my husband's grandmother's collection.
Her head is made of bisque and the back of her neck is clearly marked “MON CHERI LP PARIS 7.”
These markings indicate that she was made in Paris, France by Louis Leon Prieur sometime between 1868 – 1920s, and according to the price listed on Grandmother’s tag she considered her one of her more expensive dolls.
Her body is 18” tall (20” if you include her hat) and her head circumference is 10-1/2”.
She has beautifully painted upper and lower eyelashes and her blue glass eyes are not sleepy eyes.
Her mouth is open and displays a full set of upper teeth.
Her bisque is perfect other than a small brown “stain” hidden under the hair on her left temple.
She has earring holes in her ears and what appears to be her original hair.
Not being a doll expert and only being familiar with the body construction of the dolls I have placed for sale thus far, I was surprised that she is strung completely differently from what I’ve seen to date with string termination points on the outside of her body at her shoulders and hips.
Also, she has a body build that is unique from the other dolls I’ve posted in that it is long and much more like a little girl with completely straight legs and arms (no joints).
She is well strung and holds positions well (see photos).
Her body appears to be composition (or paper mache?) and is painted a flesh tone.
Note that even her string termination points are painted.
She has “rubs” around her middle body perhaps from a tight fitting doll stand and just a few chips in various body locations, but she has a lot of what look like little bubble holes all over body.
She also has hairline cracks around the pelvis and buttock areas and 1/2” hairline cracks at both her left inner calf and her left inner knee.
She has all her fingers, and interestingly, she has small holes on the bottom of both feet (see photo).
She wears a beautiful ensemble with a matching hat topped off with large red roses.
Her lacy blouse was loosely sewn onto her body in the back and that stitching was removed in order to take photos.
She sports 3 layers of clothing including an underdress, bloomers and stockings reaching the full length of her legs up to her thighs.
Her underdress and bloomers have an aged appearance and the elastic on her bloomer waistband has given out.
Her little black antique-looking shoes are precious.
She comes with her stand.
Her last three homes in our family have been non-smoking; no odor.
