SEVRES
by Carl Christian Dauterman, Walker & Company, N.Y., 1969.
Illustrated with 51 black-and-white photographs and numerous line drawings of marks, this early out-of-print book provides a definitive survey of antique Sevres porcelain.  Written in English, this book also covers factory dates, and makers’ marks.
The pride of French kings Louis XV and XVI, Sevres factory’s produced four types of wares.  This book considers each type:  “the useful wares (often of great beauty); the ornamental pieces; the sculpture that graced dining tables and mantels and introduced the concept of biscuit glazeless porcelain; and the decorated plaques prepared as inlays for the world’s most luxurious class of furniture.”  The author, on the staff of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a noted expert on Sevres and has included, for the great benefit of collectors, dealers and appraisers, an appendix of factory and date marks and workers’ marks.  In all, this concise book remains a most useful, illustrative, and resourceful reference for the study of antique Sevres porcelain.
