Description
this is a very rare original metal or steel sign that was removed from the historic lerner theatre in elkhart, indiana.the lerner theatre opened in 1924.
it held 2,000 seats & was host to a variety of vaudeville, big band & theatrical shows & movies.
the sign was designed to hang on an asbestos curtain.
(the asbestos curtain was a fire safety curtain often used in large proscenium theatres).
it was installed by peter clark of new york city.
the info is painted onto the sign.
originally, the sign indicated that someone was to cut a rope in case of fire.
the word ‘cut’ is crossed out & the word ‘pull’ is written.
measures 14”x20.”
the sign can be displayed just as it is or restored to look even more incredible.
the majority of the paint is present.
there is wear/damage that includes -
areas of loss on paint on lettering & on the background.
many scratches, some of which are long & heavy.
areas of rubbing.
having said all this, the spirit of the piece is still intact.
very hard to find historical artifact that’s definitely worth saving & preserving.
