Description
"Boro Bands" - Vintage Japanese Dochugi Kimono JacketThis is a dochugi style jacket, which crosses over in the kimono style (unlike the haori style which hangs open in the front). But instead of needing an obi, it closes with inner and outer ties, which can be tied loosely to allow for a more generous fit. Where haori are best for up to a size 12, dochugi can fit up to a size 16+.
We love this dochugi. At first glance, it's a standard, understated jacket with wide vertical bands in shades of tan and brown brick. The blue lining is also very nice.
But what we love about it is the very masterfully done patching of ever-so-slight blemishes that suggests this jacket was well loved, or much needed by its original owner.
The patchwork in the last photo will give you an idea of keenly it was patched on the inside - the lining hides the underside of the fabric. There are several other similar patching elsewhere on the piece, though the outer silk seems very sturdy. Still quite wearable and we highly recommend it to anyone who appreciate handwork and the concept of boro - Japanese patchwork that was part of the austerity measures taken during and after WWII.
