Markings - dark tan with brown and dark green camouflage with No. 003 in red with white outlines and cross on sides/rear of turret and 653 insignia on lower right front hull.
History - As the Germans began competition for a new heavy tank that could
combat the Soviet T-34 and KV-1, the Tiger Type 100 (P) or Leopard tank was
designed and produced by Porsche at Kummersdorf. The first prototype was ready
for viewing in April 1942 with initial testing taking place in June. Porsche's
design featured a forward-mounted turret with an 88 mm Flak 36 gun. The VK 4501
(P) proved a failure with a faulty power train. The Henschel VK 4501 (H) won
the heavy tank competition and it went into production as the Tiger I.
Consequently, only five Tiger (P) tanks were produced by Porsche and sent to
the facility in Dollersheim, Austria for training and testing purposes. before
the 59 ton design was rejected. From August to September of 1943, three of
these were later converted into Bergepanzer Tiger (P) recovery vehicles (Dragon
Armor No. 60039) in 1943, while only one armed tank saw combat. Chassis number
150013 saw combat service as a command tank - Panzerbefehlswagen VI(P) with
schwere Heeres Panzerjager Abteilung 653. It was used by its commander,
Hauptmann Grillenberg (turret number 003) on the Eastern Front in early/mid
1944 (Dragon Armor No. 60491). The surplus chassis already produced by Porsche
for the project were converted into the Panzerjager Tiger (P) Ferdinand or
Elefant tank destroyer
