Insurance Company of Saint Louis
was chartered in 1846
, one of the first insurance companies in the state of Missouri. Their original fire mark was oblong shaped measuring 6.875" X 5.0" and was made of zinc. It had a border around it with two clasped hands in the center along with the words Home Mutual. There were mounting holes at all four corners.
The mark/plaque in the listing is green in color with the border,
clasp hand in hand symbol
and lettering in gold. It is of heavy (3 lbs.) cast iron construction and measures approximately 9.125" x  6.675" with a single mounting hole. It is in good condition with only minor signs of paint loss. This mark/plaque is a very nice item and would make an excellent addition for any collection of fire marks, firefighting or insurance company memorabilia
American insurance company's fire marks were placed on the exterior of a house and were intended to discourage malicious arson by showing that the owner would not greatly suffer if the building were destroyed. Additionally, the mark stood as a guarantee to fire brigades that the insurance company which insured the house in question would reward handsomely the brigade extinguishing a blaze on the premises.
