VERY  RARE  ANTIQUE  FRENCH
'BISQUE - CARTON BODY'  DOLL

What a great find.  For the advanced collector.
This doll is 17 inches tall.  He is all original, except for the felt hat.  He has a bisque head and "carton" body.  The name "carton" was used in France before the use of the name "papier-mache".  (For reference see page #220 in The Collector's Encyclopedia of Dolls, Volume Two by the Coleman's.)  I believe that this doll is a French soldier; see the painting of the costume/body. He has a repair to two fingers on his left hand.  He has a makers mark on the back of his head that I cannot make out.  He has a small crack on the top of his left ear.  There is also a chip on the crown in the back of his head that has been glued back in place.  I think this is his original wig but it is thin in places.  The pate looks very old.  He has large fixed blue glass eyes.  Check out the teeth; there are six teeth on the top and six teeth on the bottom.  I wish I knew more about this doll but I do not.  In fact, so few exist, not much is known.  A wonderful addition to any doll collection.  From my home to yours.
