Description
We are offering a vintage 1930's Hopi IndianJimmy Koots Huhuwa
Katsina/Kachina traditional style cottonwood doll, carved and painted. The Huhuwa Kachina is technically not a clown but is revered so much because of his legacy. Tradition tells that this katsina is the spirit of a man from Second Mesa who had a crippling disease that left him barely able to walk. He was cheerful and eager to help others, he still continues among the Hopi as a katsina. The doll is covered in the kaolin-like paint that Jimmy Koots (1916-1996) regularly used with designs painted in black. The doll has wool hair, a drum in his left hand and is reaching out with his right hand.
Measures 15" tall.
In very good condition overall. Paint is all original with normal signs of wear. "Hair" is intact. Normal wear commensurate with age. Please study the photos as they are a part of the description.
