This is an example of the well made, electrical apparatus that was used for many years in laboratories all over the country.  It was made when "Detroit still cared" meaning it is extremely well made, and not only well made, but a pleasure to look at.  If you were going to use a piece of test equipment, why not make it in mahogany wood with great shiny knobs.  Eye candy for today's minimalist decorator, or still (no doubt) usable if you prefer this to the electronic tools of today.
Wear as shown in the photographs - this one was used.  The wood tops are often missing with these.  We have not tested this item so cannot comment on its condition.
Any questions?  Please ask.  We are not experts but will do our best to try to answer any questions you have.  We package well so it gets to you in the same condition as sent.  We have additional items in the same sort of category as we recently purchased two large groupings of laboratory equipment.
    Please see photos for condition.
    From a radiomuseum org:
"Leeds & Northrup, was founded in 1899, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Morris E. Leeds. Originally known as Morris E. Leeds & Company and produced electrical measuring instruments for laboratory and testing use. The new firm made galvanometers, potentiometers, bridges, and other laboratory-type equipment of high quality. In 1903, Mr. Leeds took Dr. Edwin F. Northrup into partnership and the business was incorporated under the name of Leeds & Northrup."
    From wikipedia:
A potentiometer is a three-terminal resistor with a sliding or rotating contact that forms an adjustable voltage divider. If only two terminals are used, one end and the wiper, it acts as a variable resistor or rheostat.
The measuring instrument called a potentiometer is essentially a voltage divider used for measuring electric potential (voltage); the component is an implementation of the same principle, hence its name.
Potentiometers are commonly used to control electrical devices such as volume controls on audio equipment. Potentiometers operated by a mechanism can be used as position transducers, for example, in a joystick. Potentiometers are rarely used to directly control significant power (more than a watt), since the power dissipated in the potentiometer would be comparable to the power in the controlled load.
